[Cryptocurrency World: Uber Earns Interest Even on Weekends] Buy on Thursday, sell on Sunday, reaping approximately 1.5 days of extra returns—HSBC, Franklin Templeton, and Tradeweb have moved their idle company funds onto the Canton Chain.
While ordinary people's bank accounts sit idle over the weekend, Uber's finance department has been running idle funds on the blockchain for two and a half days. This isn't just another "project launch" press release; it's a legitimate Wall Street firm testing whether tokenized cash can truly function.
What Happened (Official Joint Press Release + Bloomberg / CoinDesk)
1️⃣ On October 30th, HSBC US, Franklin Templeton, Tradeweb, Fireblocks, and pilot client Uber announced the successful implementation of a "24/7 liquidity + settlement" pilot on the Canton Network.
2️⃣ The process is straightforward: Uber used HSBC's Tokenized Deposits to purchase Franklin Templeton's tokenized money market fund (MMF) units on Tradeweb.
3️⃣ Settlement was done via DvP (Delivery versus Payment) on Canton – money and units were settled on the same leg, reducing the risk of "paying but not receiving"; the wallet layer was Fireblocks.
4️⃣ Key action: Purchased on Thursday, redeemed a portion on Sunday – compared to the traditional approach of "selling in advance on Friday and leaving it idle over the weekend," this resulted in approximately 1.5 days of additional returns (investment amount not disclosed).
5️⃣ The redeemed fiat currency can only be returned to KYC. The tokenized deposits correspond to commercial bank currency in HSBC current accounts, not unpegged cryptocurrencies.
Why is this so eye-catching? Large companies often face a dilemma: money in money market funds earns interest, but when payments are due at night or on weekends, traditional redemption and bank deadlines become bottlenecks, forcing them to maintain a large amount of non-interest-bearing cash as a buffer or resort to expensive overdrafts/credit lines.
This pilot aims to prove that: shares can continuously earn interest until the moment of payment; and can be used even on weekends.
Canton uses a privacy subnet architecture; transaction details, counterparties, and balances are only visible to the relevant parties and regulated entities—the kind of "on-chain but not naked" approach that institutions love.
What does this mean?
• For the crypto world: True RWA implementation doesn't look like a meme-based token issuance, but rather like a financial system upgrade. Every increase in the utilization rate of idle funds translates into real money for multinational platforms.
• Regarding "Public Chains vs. Institutional Chains": This time, it's Canton, a network targeting institutions and emphasizing privacy and a closed-loop compliance system, piloting with large clients, not the DEX sector where retail investors are constantly trading.
• Regarding stablecoins/tokenized deposits: HSBC is using blockchain for bank deposits as a payment mechanism, and Franklin Templeton is using blockchain for money market funds as a yield mechanism—the pairing of bank currency and fund shares is more like a new approach that traditional treasury is learning than simply "hoarding USDT."
• For ordinary people: You can't ride this wave in the short term; but if 24/7 money market fund redemptions become standard products, the idea of keeping idle funds idle on weekends will eventually be adopted by more companies, indirectly impacting the payment and wealth management portals you use.
My View: Don't be blinded by the phrase "Uber on the blockchain"—the amount isn't specified, it's still a pilot program, and money market funds don't guarantee principal. What's truly worth watching is: Wall Street is using blockchain to solve a trivial but enormous problem—deadlines. Whoever makes "weekend redemption" the default option first will be seizing the entry point for corporate treasury.
Do you think this type of tokenized idle cash management will first be rolled out by US stock companies, or will Asian treasury firms follow suit faster? Let's discuss in the comments section
