According to Bloomberg, there were signs of on-chain testing prior to the Binance $6.3 billion hack. Security researchers discovered that attackers had previously used Ethereum accounts under their control to test malware on a scale of only a few dollars at a time, before launching the attack after 4:00 AM Beijing time on October 30th, transferring over $6 billion in assets from Binance wallets across at least four blockchains. Binance co-CEO He Yi initially detected the anomaly through X, and Binance quickly assembled a multinational emergency response team of approximately 100 people to coordinate with security agencies and law enforcement to trace the funds. Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that some Binance employees privately worried that the incident would affect their year-end bonuses, but a Binance spokesperson stated that no impact was expected.
