Many people have asked what happens to Ethereum protocol revenue. It can't be that L2 caches take the ordering fees while L1 builders take a large share, right? If it's just a reasonable percentage of fees, that's understandable. Currently, it seems that the ePBS (EIP-7732) upgrade to Ethereum Glamsterdam doesn't solve this problem either. ePBS simply moves the auction into the protocol, removing the reliance on relays and mandating payments. It doesn't burn MEVs, nor does it transfer builder surpluses to the protocol. Someone proposed EIP-8375 (ePBS Mandatory Burn of Execution Rewards), which would burn a portion of the priority fees and external builder bids, so that more value would indirectly benefit ETH holders through burning. However, this is currently only a draft and has been excluded from Hegotá (the next fork) (rated as DFI), because the reward policy requires broader ecosystem discussion and cannot be decided during the fork scope determination process. It appears that, the community needs to mobilize to support the EIP-8375 proposal, to promote MEV burn, burning a portion of the builder's bid or priority fee, indirectly benefiting ETH holders by reducing supply.
