[AI Paid Users Face a Choice] Starting in December, ChatGPT and Codex will share the same credit limit—the credits you burn for coding will determine your chat usage.
OpenAI has quietly changed its Help Center: starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business will no longer have separate credits. Chatting and coding will use the same tokens.
The official statement says, "Most people won't be waiting for a reset any longer than they are now." Heavy users know this sounds like, "We think you can still tolerate this."
What exactly changed?
1️⃣ Applicable to: ChatGPT Plus / Pro / Business (Enterprise and Edu are excluded)
2️⃣ Billing unit: Changed from "number of messages/sessions" to tokens; the stronger the model and the heavier the task, the more it consumes.
3️⃣ Instant messaging is not included in this billing—but once you start using Codex or doing heavy work, you'll start competing for credits.
4️⃣ Balance and reset time: Check the remaining balance after merging in Settings → Usage.
5️⃣ Three options after hitting a wall: wait for a reset, upgrade your plan, or buy credits.
6️⃣ What about the precise numbers? How many tokens are given for each tier, and when will the switch happen at midnight—the official information is not yet fixed.
Why the change?
OpenAI itself said: to incorporate the "workable intelligent agent capabilities" of Work into the main site ChatGPT. Codex was originally the link for writing code, running the terminal, and entering the editor. Combining the capabilities and quotas of both platforms makes logical sense.
However, for those who chat and have long Codex conversations every day, it's like tearing two meal tickets into one. Previously, you could "go to coding when your chat quota is full" and "go back to chatting when your coding quota is free"—that trick won't work after December.
What does this mean?
• For regular Plus users: Casual chatting won't be significantly affected; however, if you're constantly modifying repositories on Codex, you'll likely hit a wall by the end of the month.
• For Pro/heavy developers: Long projects, complex contexts, and running powerful models consecutively will directly reduce the available time for ChatGPT.
• For OpenAI: In addition to the subscription fee, credits and upgrade paths are smoother—pay more if you don't use enough, shifting the narrative from "unlimited" to "quantifiable."
• For competitors: Anthropic and other coding assistants will benefit from this emotional outcry; "separate credit calculations" suddenly become a selling point.
My opinion: Product merging is understandable, but not disclosing the credit quota figures is unethical. Getting people used to using both platforms before telling them they're competing for the same quota, without specifying the amount, isn't transparency; it's testing the waters.
Will you stockpile credits in advance, or simply move some of your workflow to another platform? Let's chat in the comments section
