The FBI has officially named North Korea as the perpetrator of the $6 billion theft from Binance, linked to a hacking network active for over a decade!
The FBI has officially attributed the theft of over $6 billion in assets from Binance to the North Korean hacking operation "TraderTraitor."
The U.S. Secret Service and the IRS's Criminal Investigation Department also participated in the investigation, discovering that the hackers were primarily converting the stolen assets into ETH, which may then be used for further money laundering through DeFi and instant exchange services.
The U.S. Department of Justice previously linked the following three high-profile cases to the North Korean Lazarus hacking network:
2014: Intrusion into Sony Pictures, causing a massive data breach.
2016: Theft of $81 million from the Central Bank of Bangladesh.
2017: Launching the WannaCry ransomware attack, affecting numerous computer systems worldwide.
Another person on the FBI's wanted list is Park Jin Hyok. He was indicted in 2018 for his involvement in the aforementioned hacking network. He speaks Korean, English, and Chinese, and his last known location is North Korea.
The FBI has already released hundreds of linked wallet addresses and requested assistance from DeFi, cross-chain nodes, and exchange service providers to intercept the attack.
The theft of over $6 billion is just the first phase; the ensuing battles surrounding fund freezing, cross-chain transfers, and money laundering may be even more complex than the initial attack.
