As AI data centers continue to increase their demand for memory, price increases have already impacted the memory used in our everyday computers.
According to data from DRAMeXchange, the average contract price of DDR4 8Gb chips, commonly used in computer memory, rose to $27.50 in October from $26 in September, a month-on-month increase of 5.77%, setting a new record high for this model.
The memory used in AI servers is different from the RAM in our computers, but both require production capacity from storage chip manufacturers. Now, manufacturers like Samsung and SK Hynix are shifting more resources to server memory, squeezing the supply of ordinary PC memory, and increasing the cost of chip procurement for computer manufacturers and memory module manufacturers.
A 32GB DDR5-6000 memory kit tracked by PC Gamer was priced at approximately $80 to $100 on Amazon.com in the US for most of 2024 and 2025, but had risen to $553 by October 2026.
In plain terms, the development of AI is already impacting everyday consumer use. For example, the prices of graphics cards and RAM have increased significantly because AI's high memory requirements are taking up space in consumer production.
In reality, we are all paying for AI, whether we like it or not.
