OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says people keeping large amounts of RAM in personal computers is a waste of the world's limited memory supply.
Speaking on the Cheeky Pint podcast, Altman argued that:
- People running AI models locally on their computers are using memory inefficiently.
- He claims RAM in personal computers is used only around 5% of the time.
- He believes the same memory would be better utilized in AI data centers, where it can serve multiple users and workloads.
Altman said it is "quite terrible" from a global resource allocation perspective to have limited DRAM sitting unused in people's computers when data centers could put it to greater use.
Why it matters?
His comments come amid a global memory shortage, as AI companies compete for DRAM supplies, pushing up memory prices and putting pressure on consumer hardware markets.
