[US Treasury: US Blockade and Sanctions Severely Damage Iranian Economy; Iranian Currency Depreciates, Inflation Soars] According to Axios, a US Treasury report shows that the US maritime blockade, economic sanctions, and disruption of land export routes have severely impacted the Iranian economy. The Iranian rial has depreciated by about a quarter since August, with the unofficial exchange rate falling to a record low of 2.687 million rials to the US dollar in October. The annual inflation rate rose to 90% in September. Iran has not loaded crude oil onto tankers since August 25 and has sold the remaining oil stranded at sea. Furthermore, thousands of trucks are stuck at the Turkish border, with delays lasting up to 20 days; Iranian banks face additional restrictions in several countries, and some countries have suspended flights operated by Iranian airlines. US Treasury Secretary Bessenter stated that economic pressure is working and may further weaken the stability of the Iranian regime and push it to make concessions in negotiations, but the report does not consider the Iranian regime to be near collapse.
