[New York Fed Research: LinkedIn Data Can More Timely Measure Labor Market Tightness] According to Jinse Finance, a new study by the New York Federal Reserve on October 30th examined new indicators of labor market tightness provided by the social networking platform LinkedIn, finding that some of these indicators outperformed traditional Job Openings and Labor Mobility Survey (JOLTS) data. When there are fewer job seekers than job openings, the labor market is generally considered tight, which can lead to wage pressures. Researchers found that LinkedIn's "Job Openings per Job Seeker Index" and "Hiring Rate" effectively reflect changes in existing labor market indicators, performing comparably to or even better than traditional indicators. The researchers stated, "Crucially, these indicators are also more timely than the JOLTS hiring rate and traditional labor market tightness indicators."
