[US Treasury Raises Record $839 Billion in Treasury Bills This Week] According to Jinse Finance, on October 30th, the US government raised a record $839 billion this week through the issuance of Treasury bills and bonds. This move is intended to repay maturing debt and raise additional funds needed to finance the federal deficit. The auctions of Treasury bills, floating-rate notes, and 2-year, 5-year, and 7-year bonds held this week exceeded the record of $834 billion set during the same period last year. This total of $839 billion covers the size of 11 auctions, with the majority used to repay the principal of maturing Treasury bill holders. The portion truly representing "new borrowing" by the US government is only $106 billion, far below the historical high. The previous peak occurred in March and April 2020, when Treasury bill auctions surged to raise funds to combat the pandemic, with weekly net cash inflows reaching a peak of nearly $362 billion. "A record high in weekly Treasury debt issuance is hardly a good thing," said Tony Fallon of Mischler Financial Group’s interest rate sales and trading division. "The biggest risk is that investors may demand higher yields."
