It's rumored that the Binance hack was likely caused by attackers first compromising the computer of a DevOps engineer. Hacking into a Mac is no easy feat, especially a DevOps engineer's work computer, which is usually dedicated and doesn't typically have office software, email, chat, or browsers installed, making the path and opportunity for malware implantation extremely rare. Even if they did manage to hack it, obtaining the following—the server's IP address, username, and password; stealing the SSH private key, certificate, token, and cookies; stealing the VPN account and login information stored in various DevOps tools—would be crucial for establishing a persistent backdoor. This would require someone very close to, familiar with, and even having access to the DevOps engineer's computer.
