[Fed Chairman Warsh's "Not Overheating" Judgment Questioned as Economy and Inflation Rise]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that the latest US economic data is challenging Federal Reserve Chairman Warsh's assessment that the economy is not overheating. Markets continue to bet on a December rate hike by the Fed, which faces a more complex choice. Strong consumer spending and business investment have driven economic growth beyond expectations, while persistent inflation is creating a more complex choice for the Fed between maintaining growth and controlling prices.
Data released by the US Department of Commerce shows that real GDP grew by 3.4% in the third quarter on an annualized quarter-on-quarter basis, higher than market expectations. Consumer spending grew by 3.8% during the same period, while business equipment investment surged by 20.9%. Just one day before the data release, Warsh stated that he did not believe the US economy was overheating and did not want to hinder economic expansion through excessively tight monetary policy. However, the latest data indicates that even with market expectations of continued Fed rate hikes, US economic activity has not shown a significant slowdown.
