[Aave to Lower Borrowing Limits Before Phased Unfreezing to Prevent Large Positions by Binance Hack Attackers] According to Foresight News, DeFi risk and transparency service provider LlamaRisk posted on the Aave governance forum that it will lower borrowing limits in major lending markets via the Risk Steward mechanism before the phased unfreezing of Aave V3 and V4. This is to prevent attackers who still hold large amounts of ETH, stablecoins, and governance tokens from using the remaining borrowing capacity to build large positions in the first few blocks after the unfreezing. This adjustment will reduce idle borrowing capacity in Aave V3 by approximately $3.7 billion and in Aave V4 by approximately $130 million. According to LlamaRisk data, Aave V3 and V4 reserves were previously frozen due to the Binance hack, and the attackers had already borrowed 19,762 WETH from Aave V3 Core. This adjustment targets markets where pre-event borrowing exceeded $10 million and still has over $10 million of room to reach the limit. The new limit is the greater of the pre-event borrowing amount and the current borrowing amount, plus 2%. This adjustment covers assets such as WETH, USDT, and USDC in multiple instances including Aave V3 Core, Base, Arbitrum, and Plasma. For example, the WETH borrowing limit on Aave V3 Core will decrease from 2.4 million to 1.79 million, and the USDT borrowing limit will decrease from 3.09 billion to 2.56 billion. LlamaRisk stated that after the market unfreezes, as borrowing demand recovers, the borrowing limit can be readjusted through the regular process.
