[South Korea's FIU Requests Blockade of Domestic Access for Two Unregistered Virtual Asset Operators; DAXA Refers Three Involved Agencies for Investigation] BlockBeats reports on October 30th, according to Yonhap News Agency, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of South Korea has requested the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCC) to block domestic access (including terminating services) for two unregistered virtual asset operators. On the same day, the Digital Asset Exchange Alliance (DAXA) referred Aegis Ventures, TetherMax, and SuperTrust for investigation on suspicion of violating the Specific Financial Information Act by failing to register their virtual asset businesses. The FIU requested a blockade of access for TetherMax and SuperTrust. Aegis Ventures does not have a separate website or mobile application, so it was not included in the blocking request. Under current law, those who fail to register their virtual asset businesses can face up to five years in prison or a fine of 50 million won. This law also applies to foreign operators serving South Korean residents. The FIU stated that unreported operators are in a regulatory blind spot and could be used for money laundering. In June of this year, a joint investigation by DAXA and compliant operators found that the average transaction fees charged by the apprehended operators ranged from 1.5% to 10%, with the highest being approximately 62 times the average level (0.16%) of the five major Korean won trading platforms in South Korea.
