ZachXBT: Binance Hack May Be Mastermind Behind North Korean Hacking Group Lazarus
Chain detective ZachXBT, responding to a user's question on X, stated that the hacking of approximately $6.3 billion from Binance early this morning may be orchestrated by the North Korean hacking group Lazarus Group.
Lazarus was also the mastermind behind last year's Bybit heist, which cost approximately $1.5 billion and was subsequently attributed to North Korea by the FBI. In that case, the hackers similarly first compromised a developer's computer and then altered the transaction interface seen during Bybit's signature process.
Coincidentally, Binance's preliminary investigation released this morning indicates that in this case, it was also an operations engineer's laptop that was compromised, allowing the hackers to access the internal system and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
