[Report: Required Physical Qubits to Crack Bitcoin Key May Drop to Approximately 30,000] According to reports from CoinDesk and The Quantum Insider, quantum computing company Alice & Bob released a study stating that, based on their cat qubit architecture, cracking the 256-bit elliptic curve key (ECDLP-256) used by Bitcoin would require approximately 29,588 physical qubits and take about 62 minutes. This is about 17 times less than the less than 500,000 qubits estimated by Google in March of this year. While the time required is still longer than Bitcoin's average block time of approximately 10 minutes, it is still difficult to steal funds before transaction confirmation. However, the more than 6 million BTC in addresses with exposed public keys are at greater risk. This study is still a theoretical estimate. Alice & Bob predicts that hardware advancements and declining resource requirements will converge in the early 2030s, urging Bitcoin to implement quantum-resistant migration as soon as possible.
