[Stack Overflow Monthly New Questions Drop Below 1000] According to Jinse Finance, on October 29th, Hacker News user babelfish posted a chart from Stack Exchange Data Explorer stating that the number of new monthly questions on Stack Overflow has dropped below 1000. The post received 357 points and 299 comments. According to Stack Exchange API statistics, there were 1019 new questions in August 2026, 963 in September, and 948 from October 1st to 29th. In the discussion, many long-time users attributed the decline to two factors: the site's strict question review and "duplicate question" closure mechanism weakened the willingness to ask questions; existing questions and answers on the site can now be directly retrieved through search engines, thus reducing the demand for new questions. The chart in the post shows that the number of questions stagnated after 2014, continued to decline from 2017, and accelerated the decline after the release of ChatGPT in November 2022; some comments pointed out that the recent monthly data is already lower than the level in the first month after the site launched in 2008.
