[Data of Over 40,000 U.S. Department of Homeland Security Employees Leaked] According to a report by Jinse Finance on October 29th, TechCrunch reported that the personal data of over 40,000 employees of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was stolen by hackers and published online, marking the department's second data breach this year. The leaked data includes names, job titles, email addresses, mobile phone numbers, and office locations, involving border and immigration enforcement officers, cybersecurity personnel, and senior officials. The hacker, known as "Department of Peace," claimed that the data was taken from the Okta single sign-on system used by DHS, which records employee and contractor logins and system permissions. Approximately 21,000 records belong to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), approximately 10,000 to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), nearly 1,000 to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and thousands more involve agencies such as Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Federal Protective Service. The data was forwarded to the non-profit organization DDoSecrets by journalist and hacker crimew (Maia Arson Crimew). TechCrunch confirmed its authenticity by comparing offline copies with known employee names. The timestamps indicate the data was stolen around mid-August, representing approximately one-fifth of DHS's roughly 220,000 employees. An Okta spokesperson stated there was no evidence of a system or data breach. DHS did not immediately respond, and it remains unclear whether the vulnerability has been patched.
