Microsoft Joins the AI Boom in Borrowing, Plans to Raise at Least $25 Billion Through US Bond Issuance
BlockBeats reported on October 29 that Microsoft (MSFT.O) plans to raise at least $25 billion through a US bond issuance. This marks Microsoft's first high-grade bond issuance in over nine years, joining its peers in a massive borrowing spree driven by the AI investment boom. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Microsoft plans to issue benchmark bonds in 10 tranches, with maturities ranging from 2 to 40 years. The initial pricing guidance for the longest tranche (maturing in 2066) is up to 1.35 percentage points above the yield on US Treasury bonds. Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, and UBS will handle the issuance.
Sources indicated that the proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditures. This issuance ends Microsoft's long-standing absence from the bond market. Its last issuance of high-rated bonds was in 2017, when it raised $17 billion through a seven-round bond issuance.
