[Canadian Man Sentenced to 25 Months in Prison for Crypto Fraud]
BlockBeats reports on October 29th, citing CBC, that a federal judge in Miami, USA, sentenced 20-year-old Canadian man Trenton Johnston to 25 months in prison. He had previously pleaded guilty to involvement in a money laundering conspiracy and surrendered approximately $3.8 million worth of stolen cryptocurrency. Johnston began his crimes in January 2024 (when he was 17 years old), impersonating Google technical support and representatives of cryptocurrency companies to trick victims into providing wallet access codes.
In one case, he and an accomplice defrauded a victim in California of 185 bitcoins (worth approximately $13 million at the time). He then used the stolen money to purchase a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, two BMWs, jewelry, and private jet rentals, among other luxury items. [Original Link]
