[GMO Ransomware Attack Shocks Japanese Credit Market, Bond Spreads Widen by 52 Basis Points in 5 Days] Odaily Planet Daily reports that the risks associated with a cyberattack on GMO Internet Group's listed subsidiary are spreading to the Japanese credit market. Data shows that the spread on a GMO Internet Group yen bond maturing in June 2031 widened to approximately 174 basis points on October 28, up from approximately 122 basis points on October 20, before the company disclosed the unauthorized access incident, reflecting investor concerns about potential profit damage and increased compensation costs. The listed cloud service subsidiary of GMO disclosed on October 21 that it had suffered unauthorized access and received a ransom demand of approximately 8 billion yen (approximately US$50.7 million). The attackers subsequently released data they claimed contained customer information. GMO refused to pay the ransom and plans to compensate customers for their losses. Analysts point out that with the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks using artificial intelligence, such incidents could impact corporate financing and bond issuance arrangements. GMO Internet operates the cryptocurrency exchange "(Z.com) EX," which has received licenses from the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission and the Thai Ministry of Finance. The exchange has disclosed that it has been acquired, involving all shares of the target company held by GMO Internet and its related subsidiaries. It is currently unclear whether customer data pertains to the cryptocurrency exchange. (Bloomberg)
