Incredible. Today, after Alphabet, Google's parent company, released a surprisingly disappointing earnings report, many people dug up a prediction post from this summer.
The post's core argument was that the market share of traditional search engines was being eroded by AI chatbots and large-scale models. Google was creating the illusion of increased revenue by loosening keyword matching and increasing advertisers' actual payouts.
This was essentially using short-term exploitation of businesses to support massive AI investments, but it would inevitably harm the advertising ecosystem in the long run.
Many advertisers running ads on Google Search interacted with and shared this post, complaining about issues they encountered, such as exact match becoming approximate match, and being charged even when users clicked on irrelevant keywords.
For example, an advertiser might be advertising "beginner tennis rackets" on Google Search, but if a user searched for "rackets," the advertiser would still be charged, and this was becoming increasingly apparent.
It felt like Google was increasingly sacrificing advertisers' interests for better financial figures. These speculations have now been confirmed by the pressure Google's search business is under in its earnings report.
