A 20-year-old Canadian teenager who stole $13 million in cryptocurrency was sentenced to only 7 months in prison after boasting about it.
Trenton Johnston, a 20-year-old Canadian, was recently sentenced by the U.S. Federal Court in Miami to serve only about 7 months in jail, with his sentence deducted from his actual sentence. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money, but the wire fraud charge was dropped in his plea agreement.
Johnston began committing crimes at the age of 17, impersonating customer service representatives from companies such as Google and Trezor, tricking victims into giving them access to their wallets under the pretense of "account theft."
In March of this year, he and an accomplice stole 185 BTC from a victim in California, worth approximately $13 million at the time—the victim's entire life savings. After the theft, he boasted to his accomplice, "Today I took down a target with 185 BTC," and even shared his screen on Discord demonstrating the method.
He used the stolen money to buy Lamborghinis, BMWs, and jewelry, rented private jets, and splurged at Miami nightclubs. That same month, he was stopped and arrested by police while riding in a Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
He has since surrendered approximately $3.8 million in cryptocurrency and will subsequently be deported to Canada. The plea agreement initially recommended a sentence of 51 to 63 months, but the judge, considering his assistance in investigating other cases, ultimately handed down a lighter sentence.
