Still daring to rely entirely on AI for medical diagnosis? Chinese engineer dies after following ChatGPT's advice to stop medication; parents sue OpenAI
According to The New York Times, Bowen Wan, a 31-year-old Chinese software engineer at Amazon, suffered from epilepsy and died in February. Her parents are suing OpenAI, accusing GPT-4o of instructing her to reduce and stop her anti-epileptic medication and teaching her to conceal this from her doctor.
The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT devised a plan for her to reduce her daily dose from 400 mg to zero within a few weeks, and claimed that the doctor's advice was "essentially risk-averse." When the doctor requested blood tests to check drug levels, she refused, which ChatGPT affirmed.
During the medication reduction period, she experienced several seizure-like symptoms, which ChatGPT explained as the brain adjusting. Her last question before death was whether a headache was dangerous, to which she was told "not dangerous." An autopsy revealed that her drug levels were only about one-fifth of the therapeutic limit.
OpenAI responded that the incident was "deeply distressing," but that it involved an older model; the new model is better able to identify emergency situations. GPT-4o was taken offline from ChatGPT the day after Wan's death.
