[US Justice Department Seeks to Reinstate Federal Ban on Anthropic, But Government Procurement Agencies Reach Claude Discount Agreement]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that the US Department of Justice filed an appeal on October 26 seeking to reinstate the federal ban on AI company Anthropic. However, the following day, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced an expanded partnership with Anthropic, allowing government agencies to use Claude at a 40% discount, on a pay-as-you-go basis, without requiring minimum spending commitments.
Previously, in February, the GSA supported the Trump administration's ban on Anthropic and removed Claude from the government procurement list. In March, a California court halted the nationwide ban, and the GSA reinstated Claude's procurement eligibility in April. In August, the court further ruled that the government's broad ban was illegal. Although the Justice Department has appealed, the original ruling will not automatically become invalid.
Anthropic disclosed that approximately 500 U.S. federal, state, and local government organizations currently use Claude, and Claude usage by federal civilian agencies has increased approximately 20-fold in the past year.
