Coinbase is utterly irresponsible: user contact information was stolen, and their first official response was, "It wasn't us who leaked it."
The company involved is Amplitude, a third-party data analytics company used by Coinbase to track user behavior. Reports indicate that the contact information of over 70,000 users fell into the hands of hackers. Coinbase's response focused entirely on "their own system not being compromised and funds not being affected," with a casual mention of notifying users and regulators.
But Coinbase itself handed over the user list—who received it, how much, and who was responsible for monitoring it. Pushing the outsourced company to the forefront after the incident is tantamount to saying the lock was secure, but someone else lost the key.
The money is safe for now, but if you receive a call from "Coinbase customer service" in the coming weeks, just hang up.
