[Discord to Allow Search Engines to Index Some Public Chats; Users Can Opt Out in Privacy Settings] BlockBeats reported on October 28th that Discord announced it will allow search engines like Google to index chat content from some large public servers. The new policy applies to "Discoverable Servers" with at least 1000 members, listed in the Discord public directory, and accessible without invitation. Starting November 16th, these servers will have public web pages, potentially containing summaries of public channel discussions; from mid-December, individual messages from eligible channels may appear in search results. Historical messages posted before the feature's launch will not be included, and usernames and avatars will not be displayed in public messages. Users can go to "User Settings → Data & Privacy" to disable the option to display discoverable channel messages on web pages. This setting will apply to all discoverable servers they have joined. Logging out after the feature launches will only protect messages sent after logging out; to remove previously eligible public messages, they must be deleted from Discord, although search engine caches may retain them for a period. This feature is not available to teenage users and is disabled by default in the EU, UK, Canada, South Korea, and other regions. Server administrators can also disable discussion summaries by using "Server Settings → Web Presence" to prevent messages from appearing on public web pages and search results for the entire server or individual channels.
