[Federal Election Commission System Hacked, Campaign Funding Disclosure Disrupted Ahead of Midterm Elections] BlockBeats reports that on October 28, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) website was hacked, forcing the temporary shutdown of its electronic filing system and impacting campaign funding disclosures ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. FEC officials stated in an email that attackers were attempting to infiltrate the agency's system, necessitating the shutdown of internet-facing services. The system ceased operation around 10 PM Eastern Time on Monday, temporarily preventing organizations from submitting legally required 24-hour and 48-hour expenditure reports. The FEC stated that IT staff are working to restore services, and the public can still access previously submitted reports. This outage does not affect voter turnout, and the FEC itself does not administer U.S. elections. According to AdImpact data, advertising spending and future advertising bookings for the 2026 election cycle total approximately $11.21 billion, already exceeding the 2024 record of approximately $11.2 billion. According to Brendan Glavin, research director at OpenSecrets, super PACs and opaque funding organizations spent an average of more than $50 million per day over the past week; on October 20 alone, reported spending exceeded $250 million.
