Anthropic Faces Justice Department Appeal on IPO Filing Day: Seeking to Reinstate Federal Ban According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Department of Justice filed an appeal with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on October 26, seeking to overturn a ruling by Federal Judge Rita Lin in August. On the same day, Anthropic filed for its IPO. Lin had ruled that the Trump administration's ban on federal agencies using Anthropic technology lacked reasonable grounds and therefore lifted the ban. The controversy stemmed from a breakdown in negotiations between Anthropic and the Pentagon earlier this year. Anthropic demanded a commitment that its technology would not be used for mass surveillance of U.S. citizens or the deployment of autonomous weapons, a request the government refused on national security grounds. Subsequently, the Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk. In a separate lawsuit filed in Washington, the appeals court panel upheld this ruling, and Anthropic has requested a full court hearing.
