OpenAI claims its AI has made three major independent scientific discoveries, including some Millennium Prize-winning problems!
OpenAI President Greg Brockman announced that the company's AI model has made one major discovery each in mathematics, computer science, and physics:
Mathematics: Proved the "local smoothness conjecture" in all dimensions, thereby solving the Hanging Valley conjecture and the Stein restriction conjecture.
Computer Science: Proved that the "exponential time hypothesis" (ETH), widely believed in and used as a premise in hundreds of papers, is incorrect. This hypothesis is closely related to the P vs NP problem.
Physics: Rigorously proved the mathematical existence of four-dimensional quantum field theories, including quantum chromodynamics, including the existence of Yang-Mills theory, which is part of one of the Millennium Prize-winning problems from the Clay Mathematics Institute.
OpenAI stated that the mathematical and computer science results have been formally verified using Lean and the AI-generated proofs have been made public; the physics results will be reviewed by a panel of experts led by Nobel laureate David Gross before release. OpenAI stated that it will not seek academic authorship for the model's discoveries.
