Generally, such mega-IPOs tend to generate hype initially, followed by a period of capital flight. Based on SPCX's experience, the price drop usually begins no later than a week before the IPO.
Between SpaceX's S-1 disclosure (May 20th) and pricing (June 11th), the initial period was driven by hype, with the final week seeing a run on the stock.
The SEC has strict rules for issuers undergoing confidential review: at least 15 days must pass after disclosing the S-1 before a roadshow can begin. With the disclosure on October 26th, the earliest roadshow date would be November 10th.
Applying this to Anthropic: the period before November 9th is the hype phase, and the period from November 10th to pricing (the week before Thanksgiving) is the capital flight phase, peaking 3 to 5 trading days before pricing. However, the period between the midterm elections (November 3rd) and the roadshow (November 10th) only has 4 trading days, interspersed with the major non-farm payroll data release on November 6th. This week, between the midterm elections and the midterm elections, it's more likely to act as a pricing anchor than a capital flight.
Meanwhile, Anthropic's S1 funding could be positive for Microsoft, Google, and Amazon's earnings reports this week, as Anthropic's expenditure serves as evidence of the necessity for capital expenditures by cloud vendors. The primary funding raised in the IPO ultimately flows back into the revenue of these three companies and chip manufacturers, so this drain on the overall market is a drain on liquidity, but a lifeline for cloud vendors. However, this returns to the old model of "stepping on one foot and climbing the other," and whether the market can still (pretend to) accept it remains to be seen.
SPCX's market capitalization dropped by $180 billion in the week before its opening. Anthropic may have a similar effect, meaning that short-term traders should exit as soon as possible if there is a rebound in early November to avoid risk and re-enter after the market stabilizes.
For SPCX, Anthropic has a significant overlap with its AI business. In a highly competitive environment, SPCX holders may choose to sell or buy new shares instead of old ones, which will put pressure on SPCX.
