Shaw aims to disassemble and rebuild the on-chain program of Pumpfun, not to create a functionally identical token issuance tool, but to ensure the rebuilt program is identical to the original, byte-by-byte. He won't even casually fix potential flaws in the original—it sounds awkward, but this meticulousness is necessary to check for vulnerabilities in the original program.
Pumpfun is a meme coin issuance platform on Solana, with token issuance rules executed by the on-chain program. @shawmakesmagic believes such programs shouldn't be closed-source and is inviting everyone to participate in reverse engineering using AI, submitting progress to pumpfun-source. His goal isn't just to verify that it "runs similarly," but to compile the rebuilt program and compare it byte-by-byte with the original; even changing one thing would mean the comparison is no longer accurate.
He also mentioned that someone created related meme coins, and he used the transaction fees to buy them back, intending to distribute these tokens to those who helped complete the restoration. It's hard to say how many people the reward will attract, but I admire the most unpleasant aspect of this goal: even knowing there might be a problem, you have to hold back and fix it first, and figure out the original state.
