[EIP-8037 Compatibility Risks Delay Hoodi Testnet Glamsterdam Upgrade] According to Jinse Finance, on October 26th, Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter (@nero_eth) stated that core developers postponed the fork from the Hoodi testnet to Glamsterdam last week to study a report disclosed by ChainSecurity (@chain_security). The report indicated problems with the interaction between EIP-8037 and some contracts. Wahrstätter stated that the essence of the new problem is that EIP-8037 breaks the premise of some code dependencies: consumed Gas may be returned midway through a transaction, causing the gasleft() value to rise. This creates two types of risks: underflow when the Gas counter is subtracted before and after the call, triggering a rollback; and failed sub-calls returning Gas, causing code paths that should not have been reached to be executed, making the transaction appear successful. Furthermore, the state Gas reserve is not visible during execution, and measuring call consumption by the difference in Gas before and after the call underestimates the actual usage. ChainSecurity previously stated that it had discovered 13 real-world cases and was conducting responsible disclosure with the affected projects. Wahrstätter stated that delaying the fork was only to buy time; a thorough review of the contracts was needed this week, and subsequent coordination among application developers, core developers, auditors, and node operators might be required. In the worst-case scenario, the specifications would need to be modified.
