[Ethereum Foundation Researcher: Impact of EIP-8037 on Glamsterdam Contracts is Now Basically Clear] According to Foresight News, Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter tweeted that the reason Ethereum core developers previously delayed the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi testnet was due to a report from security auditing firm ChainSecurity. This report revealed issues with EIP-8037's interaction with some contracts, and its impact is now largely clear. It is known that contracts that hardcode Gas forwarding are affected by Gas repricing, such as increased costs for state writes (SSTORE). A new discovery is that certain invariants relied upon by some coding patterns are broken by EIP-8037, potentially causing consumed Gas to be returned mid-transaction, leading to an increase in the gasleft() value. This results in two problems: first, Gas counters underflow and rollback before and after the call; second, failed sub-calls return Gas, causing paths that shouldn't be executed to be executed, making the transaction appear successful. Furthermore, measuring Gas usage using the GAS opcode before and after the call may underestimate the amount because the state gas reservoir is not visible during execution. Toni Wahrstätter stated that delaying the Hoodi upgrade bought time but did not solve the problem. A thorough investigation of the contracts is needed, which may ultimately require coordination among application developers, core developers, auditors, node operators, and other relevant parties. In the worst-case scenario, the specification may need to be modified. He urged application developers and auditors to check contracts for EIP-8037/EIP-8038 related issues and report them.
