[Man Sentenced to 51 Months in Stripe and Bitcoin Scam, Ordered to Pay $811,000 in Restitution] According to Odaily, Timothy Wadsworth has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, and ordered to pay $810,965.19 in restitution. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the verdict on October 23. Wadsworth, from Rochester, New York, was involved in a scam scheme that involved processing unauthorized credit card payments through Stripe, then transferring some of the funds to Coinbase to purchase Bitcoin, which was then transferred to his accomplices. From March 10 to May 15, 2020, Wadsworth used account information provided by his accomplices to attempt to process 310 payments through Stripe, totaling approximately $1,673,600. Of these, 116 were successful, amounting to approximately $730,700. The funds were transferred through accounts at HSBC and Evolve Federal Credit Union, which the company controlled, and some were subsequently used to purchase Bitcoin. The judge also ordered the forfeiture of $810,956.19 in proceeds of the wire fraud. Between March 2020 and September 2021, the actual and anticipated losses from the related fraud scheme totaled approximately $2.06 million, including disaster loans, Paycheck Protection Program loans, unemployment benefits, and other proceeds defrauded from victims.
