[Italy Dismantles Mafia-Linked Underground Bank, Involving $76.29 Million in Cryptocurrency Laundering] Golden Finance reports that on Wednesday (October 21), Italian financial police (Guardia di Finanza) in Milan and Monza-Brianza, in collaboration with the Milan Anti-Mafia District Prosecutor's Office (DDA), dismantled an underground banking network linked to the Mafia, arresting 30 people and involving over 350 police officers. The network, based at a car rental company near Pero, Milan, involved members of the Crotone 'Ndrangheta and Casalesi families. It used shell companies to issue over €110 million (approximately $123.45 million) in false invoices to companies in the logistics and construction industries, helping them evade taxes, then returning the funds in cash and collecting a commission. The cash originated from tax evasion and drug trafficking. Funds from shell company accounts were first transferred to lenders in Luxembourg, Lithuania, and Germany, and then flowed into digital wallets controlled by the organization via cryptocurrency exchanges, involving approximately €68 million (about US$76.29 million) in foreign exchange transfers. Authorities plan to seize €21 million (about US$23.56 million) in assets; Spanish police are executing a European arrest warrant, and Swiss authorities are pursuing another suspect.
