From rare earth elements and semiconductors to shipbuilding and genetically modified military dogs, stories of such "strategic dependence" practically come with a budget in the US right now. Warhound is a new interdisciplinary company at the intersection of defense technology and synthetic biology, a favorite area of Silicon Valley mega-funds (or MAGA funds). A host of institutions, including Sequoia, Woody, In-Q-Tel (a strategic investment firm funded by the CIA), Breyer, and Franklin Templeton, have all invested. The Warhound team also boasts impressive credentials: the CEO was the Pentagon's first Chief Data Officer and later a senior advisor at Palantir; the founder of Colossal, a biotechnology company that has been working on gene editing under the banner of "anti-extinction," is considered the originator of this military dog project and has been directly involved; and the founder of defense technology company Anduril has directly endorsed Warhound. Of course, Warhound itself has stated that it will use Colossal's licensed technology for genetic modification/cloning of military dogs; and that it will arm modified military dogs with Anduril's mechanical equipment (currently, the explanation is that the equipment is "worn on the dogs," not "implanted"). Therefore, it's not surprising to see the overlap between two core investment portfolios in Warhound's investment list: - 5 firms that have invested in Colossal (In-Q-Tel, USIT, Breyer, Bob Nelsen, Builders VC) - 2 firms that have invested in Anduril (8VC, Lux Capital)
