On October 24th, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration plans to lift the 50% tariffs on some Canadian agricultural and forestry products, which could be announced as early as Friday local time, but the specific scope and timing may still be adjusted. At the same time, the United States may increase tariffs on other Canadian goods to offset this tax reduction. The report states that this move aims to help Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins and other Republican candidates prepare for the upcoming midterm elections. Collins has repeatedly requested to reduce the impact of tariffs on local businesses and consumers, and is currently in fierce competition with Democratic challengers. Trump imposed a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods at the end of August. Last month, the United States exempted some goods, but at the same time imposed tariffs on other goods, and the total amount of affected trade remained basically unchanged. White House officials have stated that any formal tariff decisions will be announced by the government.
