[Report: Iran has developed detailed plan to strike Gulf submarine cables]
On October 24th, according to Reuters, two senior Iranian security officials revealed that if the United States and Israel attack Iran again, Iran has developed a detailed plan to strike submarine communication cables in the Gulf region. One of the officials said that Iran may also prevent the repair of damaged cables to extend the interruption of communication services such as the Internet. The official warned that if Iran is attacked, there will be no longer a red line, and submarine cables and military bases may become targets. Previously, Jawani, deputy head of political affairs of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, threatened to strike seven major Internet cables under the Strait of Hormuz, and Rezai, the top security official, warned that data centers and AI facilities related to the United States in the Gulf region might become targets. Damage to submarine cables may disrupt Internet, financial transactions, e-commerce and cloud computing services in the Gulf region. Alan Mauldin, research director at TeleGeography, a telecommunications research institution, pointed out that the international bandwidth carried by the Strait of Hormuz is less than 1% of the global total, so the overall global impact may be limited, but regional network disruptions and wartime maintenance difficulties are worth paying attention to. The Red Sea may also become a potential risk area, but Iran has not publicly stated plans to strike submarine cables there.
