Swedish central bank calls for reassessment of electronic krone, wary of stablecoins and digital euros weakening local currency payment status On October 23rd, according to CoinDesk, the Swedish central bank is pushing lawmakers to reconsider the necessity of issuing an e-krona, believing that with the development of foreign currency stablecoins and digital euros, the use of the Swedish krona in the payment system may face long-term pressure. Per Jansson, Deputy Governor of the Swedish Central Bank, stated that if cash is further digitized and the Swedish krona lacks a convenient digital form, the local currency may find it difficult to compete with cross-border digital payment tools. Although the central bank has not yet decided whether to officially issue electronic crowns, it hopes to initiate preparations at the legislative level as soon as possible, as the relevant institutional and technical work is expected to take at least 5 years. The cash usage rate in Sweden has dropped to a relatively low level, with central bank data showing that only about 5% of respondents used cash in their most recent shopping. The Swedish central bank also believes that the electronic krone can serve as a backup payment tool in the event of power or communication outages and may support offline payments. If the digital euro is approved by EU legislation, it could be launched as early as 2029, and Sweden may also learn from its infrastructure in the future.
