Samsung Taylor's No. 1 wafer fab launches follow-up equipment investment, sprinting towards 2-nanometer mass production
BlockBeats News: On October 23rd, according to South Korean media reports, Samsung Electronics has started subsequent equipment investment in the No. 1 wafer fab in Taylor, Texas, USA, completing the final stage of layout before mass production. This factory is Samsung's first wafer foundry production line in the United States, with the goal of having a 2-nanometer production capacity of 20000 wafers per month by the second half of next year. Samsung has recently ordered equipment to meet the monthly production capacity demand of approximately 6000 pieces, and the equipment will be gradually shipped in. Factory 1 will start construction in 2022, with Samsung's cumulative investment of approximately 37 billion US dollars. It is planned to operate by the end of 2026 and begin mass production of EUV 2 nanometer chips from 2027. The yield rate of Samsung 2 nanometer has increased from about 60% at the beginning of the year to about 80%, reaching a mass production level. In terms of orders, the factory has already received full orders for 2 nanometers before production, with customers including Tesla AI5 and AI6 chips, Broadcom communication chips, and Arm smart device chips; Samsung and Tesla signed a long-term supply contract worth approximately $16.5 billion in July 2025, with a term until the end of 2033. The expansion of production has not stopped. Samsung plans to start the construction of its Taylor 2 factory in early November, with a scale of about 1.5 times that of Factory 1, and aims to mass produce 2-nanometer chips by 2030. Samsung has invested over $37 billion in central Texas, and the US Chip and Science Act has approved up to $4.745 billion in direct subsidies. The competitive landscape remains to be examined. TrendForce data shows that in the second quarter of this year, TSMC's global wafer foundry revenue share was 72.5%, while Samsung's was 5.9%. The landing of Taylor factory production capacity and the stability of yield will determine whether Samsung can convert order momentum into market share recovery. [Original link]
