Interpol Africa operation arrests 1462 people and recovers over $105 million
According to a report by Golden Finance, Interpol has announced that it will coordinate law enforcement agencies from 21 countries to carry out the "Serengeti III" operation from June 29 to August 31, 2026, to combat online fraud, ransomware, business email fraud, online fraud, and digital extortion. The operation arrested a total of 1462 suspects, dismantled 10909 malicious networks, and recovered over 105 million US dollars in illegal funds. The investigation confirmed 65929 victims, with financial investigation related losses exceeding $385 million.
In Angola, law enforcement agencies destroyed two illegal cryptocurrency mining centers, arrested nine suspects, seized over 2000 cryptocurrency mining equipment and six illegal power substations, and the value of the seized power infrastructure alone exceeded $1 million. In Nigeria, authorities arrested a suspect in connection with large-scale phishing and business email fraud, which collected approximately 2.1 million email addresses and software credentials; Another investigation found that an international investment fraud scheme promoted through instant messaging applications transferred over $2.4 million in suspected criminal proceeds, most of which were laundered through cryptocurrency transactions.
Neal Jetton, the head of cybercrime at Interpol, stated that cybercrime networks ignore borders and use technology to target victims on an unprecedented scale; This action demonstrates that despite the increasing borderlessness of cybercrime, international cooperation remains an effective tool for destroying criminal networks, recovering criminal assets, and protecting communities. This action is supported by private sector partners such as Group IB, Kaspersky, Fortinet, Meta, and is jointly funded by the EU European Commission joint project GLACY-e.
