Anthropic sued for training Claude AI model using copyrighted music
On October 23rd, according to a report by Golden Finance, Reservoir Music Management Company accused Anthropic PBC of unauthorized copying of copyrighted lyrics for training its Claude artificial intelligence model, without paying any copyright fees throughout the entire process. This music publisher claims that the infringing behavior involved is still ongoing, and apart from the training process, Claude's generated output content almost completely replicates the relevant songs, including copyrighted works held by Reservoir. In the lawsuit, Reservoir requested the court to order statutory damages, issue a permanent injunction, and apply for other related remedies, stating that Anthropic's actions seriously damaged the commercial value of its copyright licensing business and violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
