[Samsung Electro-Mechanics Secures 3.7 Trillion KRW Investment from Tesla and NVIDIA to Expand AI Chip Substrate Production Line]
BlockBeats News, October 22: According to Korean media reports, Tesla and NVIDIA will invest 1.1 trillion KRW and 2.6 trillion KRW respectively, totaling approximately 3.7 trillion KRW (around $2.5 billion), to support Samsung Electro-Mechanics in expanding its next-generation FC-BGA (Flip Chip Ball Grid Array) substrate production facilities.
As part of the investment, Samsung Electro-Mechanics will expand a dedicated production line at its Sejong plant for Tesla. The substrates produced will be used in Tesla's autonomous vehicles and humanoid robot Optimus's AI chips. The related long-term supply agreement will span from 2029 to 2033, covering a five-year period.
NVIDIA, on the other hand, plans to invest in the expansion projects at Samsung Electro-Mechanics' Sejong and Busan plants, aimed at producing AI computing chips and data center network substrates. Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to complete plant construction by the end of 2027, commence mass production in the second half of 2028, and begin supplying Tesla in 2029.
FC-BGA is a critical packaging substrate for high-performance chips such as AI accelerators, GPUs, and CPUs. With the increasing computational power of AI chips, the supply of related substrates is becoming one of the bottlenecks in the industry chain. This collaboration is expected to help Samsung Electro-Mechanics expand its high-end substrate production capacity and secure long-term customer demand. [Original Article Link]
