[Bessent Downplays AI Bubble Risk: Claims No 'Systemic Issues,' World's Smartest People Still Optimistic About AI] Golden Finance reported that on October 22, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent defended the sustainability of the current artificial intelligence investment boom during a private meeting in New York on Wednesday. He stated that he does not see systemic risks in the AI industry and believes this technological wave is fundamentally different from the market frenzy before the burst of the internet bubble. According to three attendees, when asked about his views on artificial intelligence, Bessent said: 'I am very good at judging whether a system has issues. I don’t see any systemic problems here.' The 30-minute interview primarily revolved around Bessent's views on the U.S. economy, with the final segment focusing on artificial intelligence. Bessent expressed optimism about this cutting-edge technology, believing that technological advancements will benefit the U.S. However, he also acknowledged that data centers and AI companies have not done a good job of explaining the benefits of these technologies to ordinary Americans. Regarding the market's comparison of the current AI investment boom to the internet bubble at the turn of the century, Bessent responded by referencing an internet company that went bankrupt during that time. He said: '(This is not (Pets.com)).' Pets.com was one of the most iconic companies of the internet bubble era and one of the last tech companies to go public before the bubble peaked in March 2000. The company eventually went bankrupt as the bubble burst. Bessent further emphasized the technical strength and commercial foundation of current AI companies. He said: 'The smartest people in the world—99% of their net worth is invested in these companies, and they’ve created the most profitable enterprises globally—believe in this technology.' Bessent has previously expressed confidence in the U.S. AI industry on multiple occasions. He predicts that AI development will drive significant productivity gains and substantially boost U.S. economic growth.
