[U.S. Judge Orders Meta to Pay $25 Billion Fine to New Mexico]
According to Reuters, a judge in New Mexico, USA, ruled on Wednesday that Meta must pay a $25 billion fine to the state, with all funds to be allocated to the state's school system in accordance with state law. Previously, on September 25, a jury found that Meta and its management misled consumers on issues related to user data privacy. The case stemmed from Cambridge Analytica obtaining data from up to 87 million Facebook users through a third-party application. The jury determined that this violated the state's consumer protection laws over 43 million times, with each violation carrying a maximum fine of $5,000 under the law. Meta had requested in court filings to cap the fine at $3.45 billion. Additionally, according to earlier reports, Meta is set to release its earnings report after 4:00 AM Beijing time on October 22.
