Continuing investment in Chinese factories, Samsung and SK Hynix rise nearly 6%
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix closed up 5.67% and 5.81% today, respectively. Both companies are continuing to invest in their memory chip factories in China, upgrading existing production lines to reduce costs and enhance product competitiveness. This helps improve market expectations for future profitability.
Currently, Samsung plans to upgrade its Xi’an factory to 286-layer NAND, with a monthly production target of 40,000 wafers by December 2027. The Xi’an factory accounts for about 40% of Samsung’s global NAND output, so upgrading such a significant portion of production has a direct impact on overall costs and profitability. SK Hynix also plans to upgrade its Dalian factory from 192 layers to 240 layers and beyond.
AI data centers require more and more SSDs, and higher-layer NAND can store more data within the same area, helping to reduce unit storage costs. For Samsung and SK Hynix, continuing investment in Chinese factories not only leverages existing production bases to meet demand but also uses technological upgrades to compete with Yangtze Memory.
PS: Although the earlier part is all news coverage, the main reason for the price surge is actually Samsung and SK Hynix increasing their investment in China, rather than any fundamental change in the semiconductor industry.
