Feeling a bit stuck lately, the more I write, the more I lose steam. But let’s keep pushing through. The demand for AI computing power is skyrocketing, while data centers are getting more expensive and centralized. Looking back, over a billion smartphones are sold globally every year, with short upgrade cycles. Tons of idle computing power are just sitting in drawers or being used while charging. Acurast is taking this route: turning smartphones into decentralized computing nodes without building new servers. Technically, @Acurast uses the phone’s built-in TEE (Trusted Execution Environment) to run tasks. The code is verified to be untampered, and inputs are kept private from the phone owner, adding an extra layer of verifiability compared to regular DePINs that only “coordinate hardware.” After the mainnet launch in January 2026, official stats already show over 330,000 phones connected, spanning 175+ countries, with more than 1 billion on-chain transactions and 680,000+ deployments. Real tasks are running too, like lightweight decision models such as Laya, which handles email classification and game decision-making on Android phones. Each response takes about 0.2-1 second. Developers can also use Cargo to run Linux containers, deploy APIs, schedule tasks, or even perform partial LLM inference. This is no longer just a concept. Next up is seeing if real paid tasks can keep flowing in, and how node quality and network stability hold up. ACU, as the native token, is used for payments, incentivizing nodes, staking (Staked Compute), and governance. The supply side is already in place, and if the demand side grows alongside AI and on-chain automation, this sector still has significant potential. Those old phones in your drawer? They’ve definitely found a new purpose.
