[Hong Kong Retired Woman in Her 60s Scammed by 'Fake Tenant' into Investing in Cryptocurrency, Losing Over HK$4.5 Million]
According to a report by Infocast News, Hong Kong police stated on the 'CyberDefender' platform that they received over 50 investment fraud cases in the past week, involving losses exceeding HK$30 million. Among them was a retired woman in her 60s who had earlier met a man claiming to be interested in renting a property on a real estate platform. The man, who presented himself as an investment expert, persuaded her to invest in cryptocurrency and provided a fraudulent investment website. The victim purchased USDT at a physical cryptocurrency exchange 20 times and transferred it to a wallet designated by the scammer, purportedly for 'buying ETH.' Initially, she was able to withdraw some funds, but later, when she attempted to withdraw more, the scammer demanded approximately HK$7 million worth of USDT as a 'tax payment.' It was then that she realized she had been scammed, ultimately losing over HK$4.5 million.
