[Bank Negara Malaysia Launches SSDS+ to Support Tokenized Bonds and Sukuk Issuance]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on October 20, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) announced the launch of SSDS+, a next-generation platform for the issuance, custody, and safekeeping of tokenized bonds and Islamic bonds (sukuk). This platform digitally represents securities, simplifying transaction processes, enhancing the flexibility of financial instrument design, and broadening investment channels.
SSDS+ was developed in-house by the bank and leverages cloud computing and distributed ledger technology. It is an upgrade of the existing paperless securities depository system (SSDS), which serves as the central securities depository for the wholesale financial market. In addition to supporting wholesale issuance, SSDS+ also enables the issuance of tokenized government and corporate retail bonds.
SSDS+ is integrated with RENTAS+, providing secure, round-the-clock payment and settlement services. The former manages the transfer and ownership records of tokenized securities, while the latter facilitates the corresponding payment transfers for bond purchases using central bank money.
Governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour stated that this platform represents a significant milestone in the modernization of Malaysia's financial market infrastructure.
